Bio

Margaret Lipsey is a contemporary abstract painter whose work explores the architecture of emotion through color, movement, and layered gesture. Based in Montreal, she creates paintings that embody presence and activate the emotional intelligence of a space. Each piece carries a distinct frequency that invites viewers into a deeper relationship with their own inner landscape.

Her practice integrates a refined aesthetic sensibility with a profound understanding of emotional awareness. Through bold chromatic fields, gestural motion, and carefully built layers, Lipsey transforms internal states into visual form. Her work is recognized for its clarity, resonance, and its ability to shift the atmosphere of a room, grounding it in strength, honesty, and quiet power.

Lipsey’s paintings have been exhibited across Canada and the United States. Her work has been featured in Visual Art Journal, Curatory Magazine, ArtSeen, Circle Quarterly, Artist CloseUp, and other publications. Her recent solo exhibition with ARTWRK.ca titled Unsilenced concluded in September 2025. Her paintings are held in private collections across North America and internationally.

In addition to her visual practice, Lipsey brings a deep understanding of energetic and somatic awareness to her work. As an experienced Reiki practitioner and Human Design consultant, she approaches artmaking as a conversation between the body, emotion, and intuitive intelligence. This integration informs the movement, texture, and luminosity that define her paintings.

Lipsey is currently contributing to the Human Design Hotel project as an Activator, creating paintings that anchor the energies of the Solar Plexus and Root centers within immersive and thoughtfully designed environments.

Her work continues to evolve through a commitment to presence, precision, and the understanding that art carries the capacity to shift consciousness. Each painting becomes a meeting point between color and awareness, stillness and momentum, shadow and expansion.

Artist Statement

My work is an ongoing study of emotional presence. I create paintings that carry the intelligence of feeling and the momentum of inner transformation. Color, movement, and layered gesture form the language of my practice. Each piece emerges through a process of listening to what is rising in the body and allowing that energy to find its visual form. The result is work that holds resonance and shifts the atmosphere of a space through clarity, depth, and quiet strength.

Abstraction allows me to speak in frequency rather than narrative. I build surfaces that invite the viewer into their own emotional landscape, not through explanation but through sensory recognition. The work offers a place to land, breathe, and connect with what lives beneath thought. I paint to make the unseen visible and to honor the full spectrum of feeling with precision and dignity.

My practice is rooted in presence. Before I begin, I tune into the physical and emotional state of the moment. This awareness directs the first mark and guides the evolution of each layer. The process is intuitive yet disciplined. I follow the movement until the surface holds balance, tension, and honesty. This rhythm shapes the character of my work and creates pieces that can be felt as much as seen.

My understanding of energy and emotional intelligence informs the way I approach the studio. As an experienced Reiki Grand Master and Human Design consultant, I work with the body as a source of knowledge. These modalities do not dictate the imagery rather they refine my ability to sense the shifts, the thresholds, and the moments when something essential begins to take shape.

I create art that meets people at the level of presence. Each painting is an environment where emotion, awareness, and possibility move together. My goal is not to resolve feeling but to give it form, to honor its weight and its light. The work continues to evolve through commitment to truth in color, precision in movement, and the understanding that art is an active force in the spaces and lives it enters.
