Bio
Margaret began painting with acrylics in 2000 while she was studying at Culinary school in Vermont. She enjoyed the freedom and emotions of abstract art. Her abstracts are inspired by her minimalist and modern aesthetic and through the exploration of other art forms, developed into what they are today.
Margaret’s current practice is focused on color. Playing with tone, shade, and tints in both monochromatic and limited palettes, her curiosity of the colors in between has led to her two latest collections, Serenity and Borders Not Limits.
Margaret paints in Montreal, Canada and occasionally in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Artist Statement
The act of painting brings a quiet to my mind, a sense of peace, and an understanding of beauty.
Through the last three years, the search for those things has become even more central to my practice. Finding the colors that bring me a sense of calm, learning how combining them into more muted tones that subtly shifts the work, deepening it. Then came the question of interaction of colors and whether composition created a dynamic shift in those middle colors or if the eye was drawn inevitably towards the purer brighter tone.
The study of color is a neverending one, whether it is finding the limits of how far a tone can stretch or determining the infinite steps between two complementary colors, the understanding is somewhere at the far end of the adventure. The delights along the way only lead to further exploration, more questions, shifts in technique to show the range or depth. Even as understanding comes the work pulls me forward showing me how little I grasp and how much more there is to discover.
