“At 40, I declared myself an Artist and it was the best thing I have ever done for myself” - Margaret
Bio
Margaret began her exploration of color and movement in acrylic painting in 2000 while studying at culinary school in Vermont. She left her career as a professional chef after 15 years to devote herself to her Art and began selling professionally in 2016. Color interaction, movement, and emotion have dominated her work for the past nine years, with collections evolving in response and often opposition to each other. Her informal training is fueled by her natural curiosity and a desire to capture and reflect the emotions present in her surroundings.
Her latest collections showcase a progression from the ethereal soft colors of lakeside scenes in "Serenity," to the structured dynamics of "Borders Not Limits," to last year’s vibrant and energetic movements in "Wild." The common thread connecting these works is her commitment to color and the expressive dance of her brushes or palette knives on the canvas. The themes often encourage a deeper engagement with our inner selves, exploring the truths of our emotions, desires, and dreams.
Margaret is currently represented by Arte Cavallo in Montreal and Crane Gallery in Memphis. She creates her artwork in Montreal, Canada and occasionally in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Artist Statement
My practice has become about embracing the entirety of my emotional experiences and the entirety of my self. My challenge and my goal is to create work that helps the viewer to embrace the validity, the beauty, and the power in their emotions and to recognize the constant movement of emotions when we allow them to flow through us.
I explore the intensity of movement, the subtle or dramatic contasts in color, and the effects of layering texture and movement to create a fuller response. My experience in the studio is focused on being completely in an emotion and letting it direct the paint on the canvas. It is allowing the rage to become beautiful, allowing the sadness to provide comfort, and giving happiness an opportunity to shine without being tarnished.
My work is a reflection of my personal expansion in becoming a Reiki Grand Master, of my observations of women from my generation rediscovering their voices and releasing the emotions they held for too long, and of my deep hope that journeying to become our wisest, truest selves will ripple out and change the world.
