Emergence

Coming out of Anger and Grief

Emergence is a collection created in the quiet turning point between heaviness and hope. There comes a moment, often subtle and often hard-won, when something inside decides it no longer wants to carry sorrow. The anger softens. The grief moves through more gently. Space returns to the inner landscape. This collection was born from that shift, the one where the body exhales and gives itself permission to rise again.

The Collection

These works were painted across two distinct studio seasons and together they trace a movement from density to light. Some pieces carry the heat of bold oranges, teals, and plum, colors that move with confidence and reach outward before hesitation arrives. Others explore a quieter joy in soft pinks, lemon yellows, gentle textures, and diffused marks. The quieter pieces hold the warmth of morning sun across skin. The bolder ones hum with renewed power.

Even as the palettes shift, the collection shares a single frequency. Each painting holds a rising steadiness, a recognition that peace can return, and a quiet enthusiasm for what might be possible again. These works live at the threshold between who you have been and who you are becoming.

Meaning and Intention

Emergence is an exploration of emotional recovery, creative renewal, and the inner motion that begins long before the outer world notices. These are the brushstrokes of choosing yourself again. They speak to the courage it takes to remain open when life has asked you to rebuild. They offer the reminder that returning to your own life is an act of creation in itself.

The Works

The pieces within this collection reflect distinct expressions of becoming. Women Gather, Deep Emotions, and Alternations explore the energetic shift from tension to release.

All I Know of Strength, Build Something New, and Become the Light begin to open the door to renewed optimism.

Precipice of Change and The Point of the Mountain hold the balance between fragility and forward momentum.

Each painting carries the imprint of this turning point, offering viewers a chance to recognize their own moments of emergence within the layered colors and textured marks.

CURATORIAL STATEMENT

Emergence marks a pivotal chapter in Margaret Lipsey’s practice, capturing the subtle but decisive moment when the emotional landscape shifts toward healing. Created across two studio seasons, this collection examines the transition from internal weight to renewed lightness. The early works carry saturated color fields and dense mark making, reflecting the depth of lived experience and the emotional residue that lingers after periods of transformation. As the series unfolds, the palette opens and the compositions become increasingly spacious, echoing the physical sensation of breath returning.

The paintings move between bold chromatic intensity and quiet tonal softness, representing the dual nature of recovery. It is not a linear ascent but a layered unfolding. Lipsey navigates these states with deliberate slowness, allowing each canvas to hold its own psychology. The surfaces reveal remnants of earlier decisions through visible underpainting, scraped lines, and shifting transparencies, offering a record of change rather than a fixed outcome.

What unifies the collection is a rising emotional frequency. Each work carries a sense of forward movement, using color as a vehicle for renewal and form as an acknowledgment of what remains unresolved. The tension between structure and release mirrors the lived experience of emerging from difficulty. This is not an arrival but an awakening, a return to possibility shaped by resilience.

Emergence invites viewers to recognize their own cycles of softening, returning, and becoming. The collection stands as an affirmation that healing is both a personal practice and a creative act, one that reshapes the interior world long before it becomes visible on the surface.
