Seeing Beauty
Seeing Beauty, 2022, 30”x40”
Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it. – Confucius
It took some time to learn how to slow down. My kids taught me the first steps when they were very little, when I had little sleep and sat in wonder of their tiny fingers and toes. Practicing meditation gave me another step along the path as I learned that I could be quiet in my mind and see more of what was sharing the room with me. The pandemic moved me further along the way, as I had many days of nothing to do.
I walked or biked along the same streets and paths, yet there was always something new. The shadows fell in different piles, a kite caught in a tree whispered for me to look up at it waving about, or a crane landing on the river. Nature is very good at helping us to pay attention. And now I look to find beauty indoors as well, in people, in moments, and in treasures I collected and then forgot. What a gift it is that in every moment there is something extraordinary to witness, if we slow down, if we take the time to see it.
