Serenity

This series was originally created for an exhibition at the Old Brewery Mission in Montreal, a shelter and cafeteria which supports the local homeless population. My intention was to bring a sense of peace and tranquility to the people who used the Mission's cafeteria. It expanded as I realized the peace it brought to me.

Several of the works were painted in my hometown of Kalamazoo, Michigan. There is a strong theme of waterside views that was inspired by the summers I spent at Lake Michigan as a child.

Borders Not Limits

Mixing colors opens so many possibilities. The in between colors shift subtly back and forth, the recede or advance depending on which color they touch. This collection pulled me deeply into that space, testing how subtle was too subtle, learning how to play with lights and darks, mixing and remixing colors depending on how well they played with their neighbours. Strongly influenced by the work of Josef Albers, this collection pushed me to play in color theory and interaction more than any other.

The shapes and lines seem to pull the colors across the panels. And so the collection became about the journey, the roads we take, the spaces and place we occupy. Do you walk around the water’s edge to gain new perspective? Do you simply look across the fence or hop over to explore more? Do you say yes to the curiosities of your heart or are you held tight to who you have always been? What beautiful mosiac could you be creating with your life, with the world, if you accepted all the pieces of yourself as part of a whole? What innovation and understanding could be possible if the borders of this world stopped limiting our connection, our humanity, our potential?

Abundance of Hope

Bursting free from the monochromatic work that I was doing at the start of my career, this collection became an expression powerfully positive feelings in a full range of color. It is predominantly painted with palette knives giving soft billowing color fields. I also began my fascination with color interaction and tertiary colors as I painted this collection.
